about

Written and originally performed by Benji Hughes (Charlotte, North Carolina). I've known Benji for many years from my time in North Carolina. We had many late nights enjoying each other's company and occasionally collaborating on music that unfortunately never saw the light of day. This song was always one of my favorites of his and he was kind enough to let me release this version of it despite the fact that he never released it himself. I heard him play it one night at our friend Ned's and remembered it vividly all these years later. It's an honor to be able to present it to the world.

lyrics

I know a dog ain’t got no legs
Rolls all around on the ground when he begs
Barks real loud when you trip over his head
Shuts up real quick when he gets fed
I wanna kill that dog but he’s loved too much
I guess he hits the same button that the sick ones touch
They put him in a wagon and they roll him down the street
Take pictures of him wagging his tail for meat
And as he gags his dinner down
I watch the people standing ‘round
And they all turn away
Don’t wanna look at that today
Don’t wanna see it in a week
“Poor freak choking on the meat”
Don’t wanna see it in a dream
Gristle showing on the teat
Time to head back to your sweets
With a decor most likely peach…
What a pretty color

I know a woman who stays down the street
Lives by herself ain’t got no teeth
Buys dog food but she ain’t got a dog
Heard she got a son lives in Illinois
And neither one of them’s got a goddamn dime
Been folks like that since the dawn of time
You gotta be a master if you wanna have a slave
You gotta make enough money to pay the maid
You gotta be cold you gotta turn away
From the tears they cry and the things they say
They don’t think like you they don’t think at all
They bought the mill and you’re a fly on the wall
But as the lights start going down
It’s safe for flies to buzz around
And take the spoils war
After all that’s what war’s for
Taking everything you can
From the ignorance of man
Separating from the fool
What comes easiest to you
What your hands were meant to hold
Throw your arms around the gold…
What a pretty color

I wonder what it’s like when you take a ride
And you know that you’re riding for the last time
I’m sure that you still got a twinkle in your eye
Even if your car won’t turn on a dime
Cause your heart’s still pumping when the light turns red
You can’t stop in time you speed up instead
All kind of nonsense running through your head
It ain’t much different when you’re dying in a bed
And when the lights start going down
If tonight you’re going down
Will there be anyone around
When you wear your deathbed gown
Will you go into the light
Knowing you did people right
Or will you stay around and fight
Holding on to your body tight
Spitting blood into the light
Making red out of the white…
What a pretty color
