about

Written and originally performed by Squalloscope (Vienna, Austria). I met Anna on my first tour in Europe with Ceschi. We all performed on a show together in Vienna set up by Wolkenvorhang (Daniela,Alex, and Ben). As soon we heard Anna's voice and lyrics, Ceschi and I just looked each other and then sat quietly. It was an absolute pleasure. We've since all performed together numerous times and her and I have recently begun work on a collaborative album together. Her writing strikes so many wonderful cords in me. It has been so fulfilling working with her in any capacity. This song has stuck with me since I first heard her perform it live before it was on a record. I love the darkness in it coupled with her wit and humor. I, of course, made it much more of a sad affair.

lyrics

I’m sweaty and I’m hopeful on a summer night
I read the news I shouldn’t think that everything will be fine
But the stripes on your shirt reminds me of something long ago
Maybe the pattern on the carpet of an airport floor or I don’t know
I don’t know

In the future our shoes will no longer give us blisters
And everyone will know the correct anatomy of the clitoris
And whether or not we should get a new phony gadget
Whether or not we will be forgiven for our sins

And you know
Being a person
It really fucks you up
But something here feels right
I think we might both be alive
We might both be alive
And I refuse to believe that big plans will work out
So I knock on every single wooden surface in town
It’s the anxiety percussion symphony
It’s a highly abstract piece of music
And I’ve somehow gotta get to the bottom of this
Find the prize in the cereal box
It’s hit or bliss
I’ll fix this world
I’ll make it right for us
I’ll make nice people out of all these assholes

And you get a special kind of scar when you grow up in a zoo
Where there’s a different kind of elephant in every single room
We fed the holy spirit with breadcrumbs
And we watched it shit on all our things
Sometimes I imagine the Westboro Baptist Church
Picketing our funerals
And I hope no one else will

And I’m standing the corner of Church and State Avenue
I’m balancing five cents on the tip of my shoe
And in the yard there’s a sign with a clumsily painted dove
Saying something heartfelt and generic about love
Like…

You know
Being a person
It really fucks you up
But something here feels right
I think we might both be alive
We might both be alive
