about

Written by David Childers (Mt Holly, North Carolina) and originally performed by David Childers. David has been a staple of the North Carolina music scene for many years. I came to know him personally through his son Robert in the early days of my working at the Milestone Club. He used to hire me to paint his house and do some landscaping work at his home when times were harder and money was thin. I'll never forget that he heard I was making some art pieces just before I was off on a trip to Europe and he insisted on buying some without even seeing them. He's just that type of person. Always happy to help others and support young artists trying to find their way. This song of his was always a favorite of mine, though he's written many great ones. Every time I would see him perform I'd always beg him to play it. It is humbling that he gave me permission to try singing it myself.

lyrics

Fat boy riding on a little moped
Leaving Waldriff’s Tavern
Big semi rolling 'cross the interstate
Pretty soon they’re gonna come together
Down by the bridge at the bottom of the hill
Where the creek runs high and the chemical spill
Covers the air with a sulfurous hue
In the early morning

Wild dogs running ‘cross the soy bean field
Rutting, fighting, killing
While the sickle moon slices ruby red clouds
And it lights the blood they’re spilling
You can hear them howl as the sirens cry
State police go blasting by
On the road that runs right by our house
In the early morning

Wake up my love
Let me take you in my trembling arms
The night is filled with terrible things
That mean to do us harm
In the early morning

Found a skeleton sitting in an office space
Of a building I was selling
Fully clothed telephone in hand
I wonder who that guy was calling
If your telephone rings and there’s no one there
It might be him but don’t be scared
He’s just trying to reach someone out there
In the early morning

Wake up my love
Let me take you in my trembling arms
The night is filled with terrible things
That mean to do us harm
In the early morning
