about

Written and originally performed by Bo White (Charlotte, North Carolina). I believe I first met Bo when he worked at a record store that I frequented many years ago in Charlotte when I still lived out in the country. I was probably 19 and working in a grocery store. I was writing songs about it and my partner at the time mentioned that Bo was also writing songs about when he worked in a grocery store. His bands and solo work were always some of my favorite things coming out of our little corner of North Carolina. I remember that he used to perform this song in his solo sets, and it always stuck with me as one of the most moving pieces he had written. I tried to find it for this project but could not locate it. After writing to him I realized he had never released it. He was kind enough to send me some rehearsal recordings for reference and to give me his blessing to record and release my version of it. It's an honor to include it here so that people can hear it.

lyrics

Skulls do not lie
At least not the way they used to
On our walls and in the hallways
All the life’s been drawn away

By taxidermy
And I ain’t knocking it
If I can remember
Giving all my love to you
And patting your head
Until the end you’ll see me through

No embracing in the morning
And I’m missing every part of it
Till I spy you propped up in the foyer
Then I feel a little bit

By taxidermy
And I ain’t knocking it
If I can remember
Giving all my love to you
And patting your head
Until the end you’ll see me through

Skulls do not lie
At least not the way they used to
On our walls and in the hallways
All the life’s been drawn away

By taxidermy
And I ain’t knocking it
If I can remember
Giving all my love to you
And patting your head
Until the end you’ll see me through
