about

Written and originally performed by Lankum (Dublin, Ireland). I met Lankum while on an extended stay in Los Angeles before I permanently lived there. I performed acoustic that night and I loved their music. The next day my friend Dustin invited me to ride to San Francisco to visit his friends Blackbird Raum who were recording there with Lankum. We enjoyed each other's company and at some point I gave them my record. A few months later I got a message about a traditional song 'The Turkish Reveille' that was on that album because they were interested in doing their own version of it. Over the years we have performed together many times in both Europe and America and they have become some of my best friends. I also had the honor of touring with them during the outbreak of the global pandemic of Covid-19. I was sure before that we would be lifelong friends, but after going through an experience likeI believe it has been set in stone. I can't think of a group whom I would have rather spent such a tumultuous time with. Their music is a wonder to behold. Their taste in song craft perfectly aligns with the things that really resonate with me in music. This song is an original of their's that I've loved since the moment I heard it. Their sound engineer and producer (fifth member) John 'Spud' Murphy was also kind enough to master this album for release, and to him I could never fully express my gratitude.

lyrics

Are we the ones
Left behind
By those who weave
Cords that bind
They draw the marrow
From our very bones
And we in turn
Turn on our own
Stood in line
in horsehair shirts
We queued up
To eat the dirt
We traded lumps
On narrow streets
Can’t bite the hand
When you’ve no teeth

And it’s a standing ovation
For the shadow of a stone
As we dig into the soil beneath our homes
The future’s further day by day
As our fathers turn away
And leave us clinging to a mother who eats her own

The granite gaze
Upon us now
A skulking mass
Recalling how
To plant a secret
And tell no lies
For now we own
Those same stone eyes

And it’s the last gasp of wonder
For a cretin on the throne
As our daughters sneak away across the foam
The future’s just a thing we say
To keep the sordid past at bay
And still we cling onto a mother who eats her own

We are the ones
Left behind
In swaddling bound
With bailing twine
They stole the marrow
From our very bones
And we in turn
Turned on our own
