about

Written and originally performed by James P Honey (of Buriers - London, England). I first met James on my second tour in Europe. Adam (Aran Epochal) booked myself and James' band Buriers on a show together in the Czech Republic and he was sure that not only would we love each other's music but that we would become good friends. He was absolutely right. James has such an amazing catalogue of beautifully crafted songs that I didn't know where to start when trying to find one to cover. I initially had planned to do a song by Buriers, but because his solo album was the latest thing I had and been listening to it often, I decided to go with this one. I'd honestly love to cover all of his songs.

lyrics

You held up your arms
Arms
Held up your arms like branches on a tree
The trees roots they were your feet
Deep in the ground
And yes it was me
Me
Yes it was me who came into this world broken
But no more broken than the rest of you
Look around

And how’d you like the sound of the swarm
Howling on the wind just off your shore
And I will be the one calling your parade
A nameless piece of filth

So many towns
Towns
So many towns down beside the water
Towns with marvelous market places
Faithless faceless cold mayors
So I pose a toast
Toast
I pose a toast to those guilty ancestors
Big-bellied butchers
And lily-livered old fools

One hardly likes the way they’re turning all there buildings into morgues
Or could it be the way the abattoir is slowly draining men
And when a candle shivers on the edge of where the breeze has been
It’s really just a sinner making plans
Towards a win

See I liked you more
More
I liked you more when you were poor and silly
And I feel sure you liked yourself
More too back then
When you held up your arms
Arms
Held up your arms like branches on a tree
And the roots they were your feet
Deep in the ground
