The Unquiet Grave

about

In honor of a recent feature on the Fire Draw Near podcast and for Bandcamp Friday, I’m putting up a rendition I did of a traditional ballad called The Unquiet Grave. This song will eventually be on an album of mostly traditional songs I hope to release in the future, but I am making it available today and today ONLY for anyone who might be interested. It will not be on any streaming platforms and will not be available again until this seed of an idea for an album comes to fruition, and I really don’t have any idea of when that might be. I’m just piecing it together as I go. So enjoy for now, and thank you for the support if you decide you’d like to download it. 🖤

lyrics

Cold blows the wind to my true love and gently drops the rain
I only had but one true love and in the ground she lies slain

I'll do as much for my true love as any person may
I'll sit and mourn upon her grave for twelve-months and a day

When twelve months and one day had past her ghost began to speak:
"Why do you sit upon my grave? Why won’t you let me sleep?"

"There's one thing that I want sweetheart. There's one thing that I crave
And that’s kiss from your sweet lips, then I will go away"

"My lips are cold as clay my love. My breath smells earthy strong
And if you kiss my cold clay lips your days will not be long

Go fetch me water from the desert sand and honey from the stone
And flowers from a withered stalk that just today were grown

Go down in that brown garden where you and I once walked
And like that bud you’ll find your love has withered on the stalk

The bloom is dead and dry sweetheart. The rose will not return
You’ve lost your one and only love. What can you do but mourn?”

"When shall we meet again sweetheart? When shall we meet again?"
"When honey flows out from the stone and seas cover the desert sands”
